What is so important about the reaction of Homer’s mother to the rocket launch? Why do you think she reacted as she did?
The novel October Sky is about boys making rockets and launching them. Their first attempt at launch their rocket did not go over well. They accidentally blew up the Hickman's fence. Sonny's moms reaction to the accident was surprising. She was not mad, but she was very understanding. I think she was more worried about the safety of the boys than the safety of her house and fence. All she said was " I thought I told you not to blow your self up". I think she didn't want to yell at the boys because she thought they might think she was not supporting them and their dreams. Sonny's mom I think always was the most encouraging one to her son dream, and she didn't want that to change. I also found it good that Sonny's mother stood up for Sonny's when his dad was yelling at him. I think after the rocket explosion it was important that Sonny's mom was strict and that she still believed in her son.

In Chapter 2 we meet many new characters. What types are they so far? (stock, round, etc.) How do you feel about them based on the author’s description?
In English 10-1 we are reading the novel October Sky by Homer Hickman. This story is based on the authors life. There has so far been a lot of characters introduced. Since the characters are based on real people the author can paint a picture in your head very easily. There are many different types of character in this novel. For example there is major and minor characters, and dynamic and static character. The main characters names are Sonny, Quentin, Roy Lee, O' Dell, Homer Sr., and Elise. The minor characters are Jim, Valentine, Dorothy, Poteet, and Daisy Mae. Based on the description from the author I am understanding the story better because I can understand their actions from their physical appearance and personalities. Be able to understand the character better helps understand the story and its purpose.

What is your initial impression of the novel after reading the first pages? Does this seem like a novel you will relate to? What has sparked your interest so far?
Currently in English 10-1 blue we are reading the novel October Sky. My first impression of the novel after reading the first few pages was that it was boring. The way the author wrote was not the style that I usely read. The type of novels that I usely read is: fantasy, animals, and series. But, after reading the novel for a while a started to get into it a little bit more. I wanted to know what was going to happen next with the rocket boys and the characters relationships with one another. The part of the book that has sparked my interested so for was when you the boys tried to make their rocket and they blew up the Hickman fence. I also like the part of the novel when Sonny was tell you about where his lived and what his life was like. I think this book will be good and hopefully entertaining.
